Community of Practice (CoP) in Autism in Rhode Island will host “Understanding Sensory Reactivity and Regulation through the Optimal Engagement Band,” presented by Leslie Fanning, Ph.D.
Many children with autism present with unique and varied sensory needs. Although professionals and parents are now aware of different sensory tips, tricks and tools, there is still some confusion on how to implement different sensory-based interventions to best meet the needs of children and youth with autism.
The Optimal Engagement Band, adapted from Baranek et. al. (2001), provides a visual framework of how to understand each child’s sensory profile and select individualized, sensory-based interventions for children and youth with autism.
This presentation will include a discussion of the seven senses, the Optimal Engagement Band and how parents and professionals can use this information to improve engagement when supporting children and youth with autism.
