Early Vocabulary: From Assessment to Action

Early vocabulary development is a foundational building block for communication, language and later academic success. This interactive training will provide practical information for using vocabulary assessment results to inform communication/language goals and strategies that families can use during everyday routines and interactions. 

Participants will learn how to interpret results from the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (MB-CDI) and use those results to identify appropriate goals and next steps for individual children. The training will explore evidence-based practices that enhance word learning and offer concrete strategies and resources for expanding vocabulary within the context of a home visit. Throughout the session, we will also highlight important considerations for supporting early vocabulary development in children who are Deaf or hard of hearing.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

1. Describe a child’s language strengths and challenges based on the results of the MB-CDI.
2. Identify appropriate language goals and next steps when given a summary sheet of a child’s MB-CDI results.
3. List a variety of evidence-based strategies to share with families that enhance a child’s ability to learn new words.
4. Locate resources to support parents in providing high-quality language input to their young child.
