Medicaid Impact: Rhode Islanders share how their funding empowers them
For Nathan Frade, 37, of Westerly opportunities to be involved in his community are essential. With the funding he receives, he participates in a day program that has opened doors to employment, life skills development and social connections.
His funding also covers transportation and support, allowing him to be active outside of his home, which he shares with his mother and sister. “I would say the best part of my funding is how it allows me to get into my community,” Nathan said. “Through my day program, I participate in bowling once a week. It keeps me in shape for the Special Olympics. I also go to the store to shop for items on my list and get a shave and haircut.”
Nathan wants lawmakers to recognize the impact funding has for people with disabilities. “I proudly vote every year. I vote for people who understand how important it is to create laws that allow all people to live a dignified and fulfilling life. I deserve access to opportunities, and lawmakers should fund the supports to this access.”
Without his funding, Nathan knows his life would be drastically different. “I wouldn’t be able to grow and thrive as a person. I am more than my diagnosis. Funding helps grant me much-needed support, access and community. It would be devastating to live without it.”
