    Rhode Island Settlement Agreement and Consent Decree

    The State of Rhode Island entered into a Settlement Agreement and Consent Decree with the United States Department of Justice in 2013 and 2014, respectively. The agreements address findings that the State violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by failing to serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in integrated settings, and by placing youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities at serious risk of segregation. Under the terms of these agreements, the State is committed to transform its service system over a 10-year period of time. This site provides resources and updates related to this agreement.

    The center provides small business owners in Rhode Island with the services and expertise they need to succeed, including free, expert counseling, relevant training and access to important resources. The lead office is located at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston with multiple outreach locations statewide.

    RIPIN is nonprofit organization established in 1991 by a passionate group of parents of children with special needs who recognized that they could provide support through sharing essential information and helping to find the resources they needed for their loved ones. RIPIN’s services include special education and supports, specialized services for children and young adults with disabilities, healthcare and health insurance and health education training, support and resources.

    Transition to Adulthood: A Health Care Guide for Youth and Families

    This guide, published by the Autistic Self Advocacy Network provides people with disabilities and their families with information on how to choose a source of health care coverage, create a health care support network, integrate health care transition goals into their educational plans and manage their health care. It includes useful guides and worksheets for keeping track of health care records, making doctor's appointments and talking to doctors about health concerns.

    Youth Transition Services, Ocean State Center for Independent Living

    Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) is one of two independent living centers in Rhode Island. OSCIL, located in Warwick, provides information and referral, advocacy, assessment services and a range of other services designed to support independent living. OSCIL helps to provide the necessary independent living skills and real life experience for self-directed youth ages 14-24 with disabilities to help them enter the post-high school world successfully.
